Cataract Density Linked With Refractive Outcomes

Postoperative refractive outcomes of cataract surgery may be affected by cataract density, according to a study published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.(1.)

Tetsuo Ueda, MD, of Nara Medical University, Kashihara, Japan, and colleagues, used multiple regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between mean absolute prediction error and cataract density, age, preoperative visual acuity, anterior chamber depth, corneal radius of curvature, and pre- and postoperative axial length of 96 eyes with nuclear cataract.

Mean absolute prediction error was correlated with cataract density (risk [r]=0.37; P =.001) and the difference (postoperative from preoperative) in axial length (r=0.34; P =.003), but not with other parameters studied. According to the investigators, the axial length difference correlated with cataract density (r=0.53; P <.0001).
